That's not terribly far off the mark for a professional grade NVR system that probably has similar functionality as the Surveillance Station software. I'm not saying I like it a whole lot, but it makes sense. You pay for what you use. Your average user probably never buys a license. A power user with a mega system is probably cross-shopping dedicated NVR systems, and the Synology offering isn't terribly priced.

Synology get with the times I want electronic delivery, I pay employees and I talk with other business owners. The four channels are corresponded to by the four lenses, and the fifth channel is the view of all four cameras combined. If you wish to display all five channels in Surveillance Station, Synology will charge you for five licenses accordingly.

In the surveillance station the license keys are activated and functioning. But in e few months I want to buy a bigger DS (maybe the DS-1813+). Is there any way to read-out the license keys or to save them into a file? Haw can I transfer these licenes to another diskstation. I do not want to migrate the DS, I want to make it real new. Can somebodey help me? Thanks, Cheers, Thomas.

Not very convenient as they have separate timelines. Still looking for a more permanent solution, and I'm ready to buy more licences if I get it working. The reason it no longer works is because Synology have changed their T&C's around moving licences, even on genuine hardware.

If I already own a synology NAS or buy a cheap second hand one could I use its SN and MAC on my xpenology build to install a legitimately purchased license? Sure, you can, but first read license agrements. IMO, since license is given to a particual hardware, which is identified by pair of serial with mac, by using serial and mac on xpenology and using survillance licence you will violate license agrements. But it is just my opinion and you can ask synology support about that. Let say synology will find a way to identify that you have installed extra license on xpenology, and will revoke all extra licenses with no refund?

Hello, I own a DS-1511+ and years ago I bought two additional licenses for new IP-Cams. I used this in my DS-1511+, but did not save the registration card.

Explained what the licenses do, but the inevitable question is 'Why?' The best way I have seen it explained is that you are paying for the continued development of the Surveillance application on a scale that ranges for the use you have. If I'm Joe Average homeowner with two or three cameras, then buying my Synology NAS and having it serve as a surveillance system is a bonus. If I'm Fred Businessowner then buying ten licenses plus the hardware is compariable to purchasing a professional grade surveillance system from a vendor. An RS815 + 16 licenses is probably about $2000 without disks. That's not terribly far off the mark for a professional grade NVR system that probably has similar functionality as the Surveillance Station software.

Video servers such as Vivotek VS8801 can connect to up to eight analog cameras. In this case, Synology will charge you for eight licenses accordingly. This rule will also apply to video servers supported in Surveillance Station.

Amazon was selling 1 license for $64, Synology America $54 and Ebay for $50. But if you got a 8 license code it was $42 per license. And I got the code in my email in about 5 minutes from when I purchased it. Once I purchased it, I had to send a message to the seller and ask them to send it email. I got an email back right away asking me to verify I am using SS version 6 and up and that my unit supports enough licenses. I responded that it did and next thing I know I got my code.

Is that not so? That's why I was curious about the surveillance package as it is quite clearly an 'add-on' synology sell and should be compensated for. Yes, the Xpenology is really only the Linux kernel with some mechanisms in-place to combat the checks done by the Synology OS, extra drivers and it emulates the device that has serial number. But the real problem starts when you download the PAT file and use the proprietary parts of the Synology OS on the box that wasn't licensed for it. Technically, in some countries its illegal to bypath the mechanisms that prevent you from running on a non-licensed hardware, so the bootloader would also be illegal. Thanks, I was under the impression that xpenology was leveraging open source software (or at least not completely proprietary) and not an infringement of Synology license.
