I suppose HRD could institute that kind of setup, but my experience with such is that they generally work poorly, result in security complaints that the software is phoning home, cause problems if you move the software from one machine to another, and are just generally an expensive pain in the neck for companies to support and maintain. I don't use HRD and I'm not associated with the company, but I can clearly see why they won't issue a refund once a license is delivered. Caveat emptor indeed, and use that 30 day evaluation period to make up your mind about purchasing, but 'no refunds' is hardly an uncommon policy where software is involved.

(Note that I have never offered for download any prior or current versions of the paid software developed by HRD LLC, etc.) A couple of side notes: Even though I have unfixed support tickets submitted to HRD LLC from a couple of YEARS ago that it seems may NEVER get fixed, the new versions of HRD are significantly better than the free version and IMHO definitely worth the price to buy and keep buying each year. Secondly, a LOT of hams can’t afford to currently buy the software. BUT if they get to use the free one and see how great that version is, X number of them might, just maybe, see the benefits of buying the latest version because they liked the free one so much but want the latest features and benefits. Lastly, there might be a certain number of Y users of the free one who could afford the paid version but are happy to limp by with the free one instead of buying the paid one – thinking that they are winning by doing so. My guess is that X is much bigger than Y.
Easier to read than Acrobat! I'm in the process of migrating my old AA5FR.com site to this new site to reflect my new K3RRR.com call sign. As I go through the process, I am also developing several new pages that describe my current antennas and other things of interest such as EMP threats. If you see any problems with bad links, bad grammar, missing photos, typos, any stupid errors, etc., I would greatly appreciate your reporting those to me so I can fix them ASAP.
That having been said, I know that there are a lot of folks out there that still want the free version – for either a test drive or as a permanent installation – and it is getting harder to find the free version. For that reason, I located the latest free version and am making it available here on my website for those who still would prefer Simon’s original code. To download the installation software for the latest free version of Ham Radio Deluxe 5.24.38, just click HRD FREE. OopsNo you can’t. At least not at this site – your mileage may vary at other sites. It is no longer on my site due to Ham Radio Deluxe LLC requiring me to stop providing this free version to the ham community.
Upload daily to LoTW with one click, log thousands of DX stations a year - not a single issue. I thought to keep a copy of it (v5.0 Build 2893) on my Blog while it was still free, but other than update the country files occasionally with the DXCC changes (easy), I've never had to reload it:. I stayed away from v5.11 and newer (including v5.24) because it appeared the new owner group had their hands on it, the cheesy bubbles on start-up turned me away so I stayed with Simon's last version v5.0, build 2893. Every year that goes by, the amount I saved grows and I haven't had to deal with the blacklist bullshit either. Win/win in my opinion. N0UN « Last Edit: May 11, 2017, 12:26:19 PM by N0UN » Logged. The bottom line is that I should have waited to make sure HRD was 100% functional in my environment before paying the license fee and for that, I blame myself. I knew HRD's refund policy (or lack thereof) before I paid them so its no one else's fault by my own. If this ends up being a $100 lesson learned, then shame on me. But yes, they are working with me and are attempting to replicate my situation and hopefully provide a workable solution. Waiting patiently.
Command to the radio, and, from the radio to HRD is flawless. I use the bookmark feature, which, is a great feature, to book mark frequencies as a function of band and skip around across the band via that bookmark feature routinely. The logbook is benchmark in terms of speed of lookup at qrz.com, and, once setup with location grid, instantly gives me the distance to another station. The UI is clean, clear, without any overlapping icons or buttons. I have used DM780 on all modes and, after a little learning curve for macros, it is fun, reliable and easy to use. I do use FLDIGI as well because it does have a better CW decoder, and, for PSK-31 it has auto frequency tracking for drift in the incoming, received signal.
I've never had a make or break problem with it. I've used it on 3 different platforms and PC's. Starting with a old dual core AMD (X2 6000+) and windows XP through Windows 10 on a brand new PC with a Intel i7 4790K running windows 10.

There is no free lunch with HRD. You can use the old version like I use to and deal with the crashes and lack of features or you can pay the $99 and get something that runs all day long without a problem and has about twice as many features. 73s Merry Christmas Rob Fooey. I've been running 5.24.38 for years on different systems with no issues whatsoever, and I see no need to change.

In three years of use the program has never 'crashed' even one time. From my perspective, the effort and energy that Simon Johnson put in over the years, to deliver to us a benchmark free product, is the pinnacle of the ham radio spirit of invention, and, support. HRD, the one I downloaded for free from the original site that Simon supported, has worked great, and, opened a world of ham radio I would never have visited without his software and effort. I will be using it as long as I have my FT-1000MP radio, which, is fully supported. Just be warned it's buggy as crap and crashes almost every 30 minutes.

Is that a problem? Is 30 days not enough to test out some software? I don't really understand the problem with the concept of a non-refundable license. The company I work for won't give refunds for licenses either, once they are cut and sent out. Unless you have some cumbersome networked license server scheme where the software phones home every time you run it to see if the license is valid, you have no way to know (other than via your own good faith) that the person who demanded a refund actually discarded the license and is not running the software.
