Uninstalling old software can delete a file. Viruses and other malware can damages or overwrite driver files. Drivers can become obsolete when the manufacturer or publisher adds new features and finally computer files can get corrupted from continuous read and write operations. What Problems Can Corrupt Drivers Cause? Corrupt device drivers can cause everything from a specific feature not working to complete failure of a device.
Eliminating most of the performance conditions that occur as a consequence of an out of date driver is achievable by obtaining hold of the most current variants as early as possible. Just remember, fitting an untrustworthy driver cannot eliminate the undesirable side effects on your system, and can possibly make things even worse.
When I rebooted, I could not access the drive any more, even though it was stated to be working fine in Device Manager. I tried to assign it a Drive Letter in Disk Management, but it wouldn't allow me to strangely. What fixed it for me was, in Device Manager I went to 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'.

Pros: The drive performed quite well. I performed a 29 gig backup across a Gigabit network in 2 hrs on a 3.0 Ghz W2K PC. Cons: Only install the basic drivers. Forget about the Retro Dantz backup software. Its about as flaky as my Uncle Edwin's Dandruff.
2) Type: diskpart. 3) At the DISKPART prompt, type: rescan.

This is why extra-big external drives are great - they give you lots of headroom for backups on a single main PC in the long run, and in the meantime they also let you back up the data from multiple computers now and store extras like digital music, pictures and video in any space you have left over. But there is one drawback to going with Maxtor's highest-capacity OneTouch drive. It spins at 5,400 revolutions per minute an has just a 2MB cache buffer, whereas the smaller OneTouch units spin at 7,200 RPM and have an 8MB cache buffer to pump data along much more quickly. This means the overall seek-time and data-transfer potential of the 300GB unit is markedly lower than that of the smaller drives in the OneTouch family. Even so, even the slowest OneTouch model still blows away the read/write speed of tape or optical drives, and it's fast enough that you'll be able to play things like music and video files off it smoothly. And the slower peak transfer rate of the 300GB unit is also a less important issue than it might be with an internally connected computer hard drive. The OneTouch hooks up to a computer via an external bus - the units come in either standalone USB 1.1/2.0 (12/480 Kbps) or FireWire (400 Kbps), or a combination of the two.
I have been using this program for eight years for my nightly backups. Pros: This drive will allow you to easily tranfer and store files easily because fast transfer rate and high storage capacity. If you network the drive properly, you can even have it act like a basic/simple file server.
Wow, I'm amazed. Thanks for your reply. No I had not tried it on another Windows 7 computer.
Tape is slow. CD-Recordable or ReWriteable burners are a bit faster, but their capacity is limited - sitting there feeding in disc after disc is mind-numbing. DVD-recordable and other optical options have more capacity, but they're expensive. That's where a hard-drive-based backup system like Maxtor's new OneTouch can save you a whole lot of time and aggravation without breaking the bank. The OneTouch is an external hard drive with massive capacity that works with both PCs and Macs.

Sometimes, you may find that although certain devices you installed are working just fine by themselves - they are not responding so well when they interact with other hardware devices. The reason for that may well be that the other device's drivers are not quite up-to-date. Problems like these arise quite often and are also another reason why many people find using an automatic update tool like Driver Genius - as very effective. Since it constantly monitors all device drivers in your system and updates them on a regular basis - you can keep enjoying the full potential of your entire system, as it keeps running smoothly even when you upgrade, remove or change any of it's hardware components.
If you mess up the process then it is entirely possible that your PC will become unbootable, something that is not conducive to smooth operations. The “msinfo32.exe” file will give you some of the details that you need for the search including the identification protocol. Given the complexity of the information which it handles, the BIOS has a reputation for being a complex part that is not suitable for handling by novices. However, for the vast majority, they never need to look at the motherboard or BIOS since these items are designed to function independently. Furthermore, if you have; even the drivers themselves will cease to be a problem because you know what you need to buy and upgrade by scanning the dialogue box.
Has anybody managed to install this device on Windows 7? If so, could you please advise me how to install the driver for the front panel? Regards, Johan.
This external hard drive is a great solution for those with computers that are filling up quickly or those who need idiot-proof backups. Maxtor's OneTouch II external hard drive picks up where the original OneTouch leaves off, offering larger capacities, higher performance, and added security to protect your most precious digital secrets. Unfortunately, the OneTouch II still suffers from an overly large enclosure that is sure to dominate any desk it sits on, and it doesn't support Linux computers. Still, if you have a lot of digital files to stash, it's one of the easiest and most reliable places to put them. The latest OneTouch II is built around Maxtor's 3.5-inch DiamondMax 10 drive, which includes 16MB of hardware cache, spins at 7,200rpm, and holds 300GB of data.
You can't go wrong with this one. It’s a nice price for the essentially the same piece of kit as the One Touch 2 series, except they are not avaliable in the 160 GB size. While you could get something in the 200Gb range internally for this price, that’s not the point - you couldn’t whip out an EIDE drive and hot-swap it around your various computers as you can with the One Touch. If you need to back up a set amount of data, which won’t change between reinstallations, and you’re not performing video capture, this is your best solution so far.
I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 80G. Nothing I read on any other forum worked until I went to the Device Manager -> USB Mass Storage Device and saw the drive there.
I phoned and explanied thisa and was given the necessary code to quote to return the drive. My impression was therefore that a code 10 meant a hardware failure.
Maxtor's site also includes a top-notch online forum. Phone support is toll-free for the life of the product, but the company staffs its phone line only Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. To 5 p.m., MT.

Nothing I read on any other forum worked until I went to the Device Manager -> USB Mass Storage Device and saw the drive there. It had a yellow triangle trouble sign on it. When I clicked on it and went through the troubleshooting exercises including hunting for drivers on the my machine and Microsoft nothing worked.
