5.1 Dts Music

So, now, multi channel audio has been relegated to being supported by only a niche market of the already niche market audiophile community. At least, with bluray, we have a commonly adopted format that can deliver high-resolution multi-channel music whenever an artist decides to create it. I will remain an immovable fan of music in more than only two channels for as long as I am able to listen.

In other words, you need a thoroughly refined home theater audio playback setup to bring out the subtle difference in sound quality between these two formats. Its all got to talk to one another perfectly, or that static can happen. The static isn't damaging unless the volume is cranked (my understanding), so when testing your settings keep the volume low. I have no trouble playing back dts encoded music in the os3, outputing it via optical to my yamaha htr-5960. I can fully understand all the legal stuff and the disclaimer. But I cant see the logic in whats working and whats not. How come it works with your ps3 and your amp, when it doesn't work on my ps3 and my amp - when its works perfectly for me using my sony cd player and my amp? My ps3 plays DTS on DVD's so its not that its broken or something.

I began my listening tests with some DTS 5.1 music, including The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over, Diana Krall: Love Scenes, and 'Yesterday' from the Boys II M en DTS disc. I listened for each subwoofer's ability to accurately reproduce the low end bass melodies of Timothy B. Schmit in 'New York Minute' as well as provide the material located in the difficult crossover frequency ranges of each system (which varied). This included baritone and bass vocals, guitars, bass and cello instruments, and percussion, which danced around the 80Hz - 120Hz range frequently and could suffer from a poorly designed system integration.

I have tried with the raw dts cd and with dts as raw wav imported. My old Sony CD X303ES (optical) works perfectly. So my conclusion is that is not the RAW data format that is causing this, but somehow the ps3 that doesnt send the right data to the amp. Any help would be appreciated. I think the problem some of you guys are experiencing is a combo of different things. First is DTS and the WHOLE DTS 5.1 format.

I'm really in full agreement with mwinstanley's statements.

This means that these surround sound formats would yield too much data to store, and equally important, to process in an efficient and economical manner in real time during playback. In other words, under a multi-channel scenario, compression becomes a necessary evil. It is here that the real difference between these sound formats emerges crisp and clear. And ultimately, it is the significant difference in compression ratios and bit rates adopted by these two formats that has led to so much controversy in this Dolby vs.

In the first rounds of the SACD/DVD-A format war, in 2000, both sides promised a full slate of titles by the end of the year. They repeated that pledge the following year, but the major labels squeezed out only small batches of six or seven titles at a time, followed by months of no multichannel releases at all. The long-term commitment to SACD of audiophile labels such as Chesky and Telarc far outstripped Sony's own. Eventually, substantial chunks of the catalogs of Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, the Kinks, the Moody Blues, the Police, and the Rolling Stones were released on SACD, and the catalogs of the Doors and Neil Young are well represented on DVD-A. Even so, most of the SACD titles are two-channel only.

Click to expand. What's the point of having needlessly having instruments blaring from the surrounds with no musical/artistic purpose other than 'because you can'? It's like the 21st century version of panned stereo drum mixes that sounded like the drummer had 20ft long arms. Surround mixes should serve the music, not the other way around. If the material works with an aggressive mix, great. There are some great aggressive surround mixes out there.

To 'Two-channel is how music was meant to be heard.' To 'Two-channel is how God intended us to listen to music.' None of it has any actual logical rational behind it. It is only stubborn refusal to admit the reality of the facts.

But you didn't need SACD or DVD-A for that—you could achieve pretty much the same effect with five speakers and stereo LPs and CDs processed with Dolby Pro Logic II matrix surround. For the most part, the surround aesthetic never matured past its rudimentary beginnings, though there were notable exceptions. For example, the Talking Heads' keyboard player, Jerry Harrison, and engineer E.T. Thorngren made masterful 5.1 remixes of the band's eight studio albums. Check out 'Found a Job,' from More Songs About Buildings and Food (DualDisc, Sire R2 76450).

If the service just reissues the same old rock and jazz titles that failed on DVD-A and SACD, e-onkyo music will be doomed before it starts. Oh, and there's one other catch to the plan: only two of the newest Onkyo TX-NR818 and TX-NR717 AV receivers will support the service. I have no idea why other receivers won't be capable of playing the files.

Updated: March 5, 2016 Dolby vs. DTS - Which is Better? Which surround sound format delivers better home theater sound? This Dolby vs. DTS surround sound is a rather hotly debated issue. Many argue that DTS Digital Surround is capable of delivering better sound quality than its Dolby Digital counterpart. But is this really so?

Tens of millions of homes were so equipped, but the Digital Surround CD barely made a ripple. Still, one way or another, 5.1 was coming, and it was left to recording engineers and producers to grapple with the specifics: ie, how would the extra 3.1 channels be used? Would the speaker placements for music surround conform to those accepted for a Dolby/DTS 5.1-channel home-theater setup: left/right speakers in front, a horizontal center speaker above or below the monitor, and a pair of small surround speakers flanking the listening position, mounted a few feet above the ears of the seated listeners? That would have made too much sense. The home-theater model was rejected in favor of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU): five full-range speakers, all at the same height, placed equidistant from the sweet spot. As a standard for recording studios, ITU is fine; for home systems that have to accommodate families and furniture, it's completely impractical (footnote 1). What about a subwoofer?

But if the music is better suited by simply using the surrounds to widen the soundstage to provide a more open presentation, so be it. What I'm generally not crazy about are the surround mixes that just put stuff discretely in the 4 corners and don't use the space between the speakers (a lot of quad mixes I've heard are guilty of that).

Click to expand.Ah. You could be stuffed, unless it'll work if you burn the WAV file onto a DVD-R - I see no reason why it shouldn't. I assume of course that your DVD player has a digital output, and your receiver has DTS decoding? I don't know if your DVD player will require DTS itself for this to work. The file itself is not 'music' per se, it's a coded DTS file.

DVD-Audio appeared a, launched by a consortium that included Matsushita, Toshiba, and Warners on little more than faith that the next-generation music format could ride on the coattails of DVD-Video's rousing success. SACD was designed around Sony/Philips' (DSD) codec, which stores music as 1-bit data sampled at an ultra-high 2.8224MHz.

The core stream can be decoded by any DTS decoder, even if it does not understand the new variant. A decoder which does understand the new variant decodes the core stream, and then modifies it according to the instructions contained in the extension stream. This method allows backward compatibility. DTS's main competitors in multichannel theatrical audio are and, although only Dolby Digital and DTS are used on and implemented in home theater hardware.
